Soon, a new type of outbuilding was created, called the Carriage House. Here is where the horseless carriages, or automobiles were stored. Eventually, the building moved closer to the house and became known as the “garage”, which originates from the French word “garer”, meaning “to shelter or protect”. These original Carriage Houses had wood doors and a charming design that is still appreciated by modern architects and homeowners alike.
